Academic Coach

Empower Academic Coaching is an academic coaching company dedicated to helping middle and high school students achieve academic empowerment and helping families develop peaceful relationships. We do this by:

  1. Helping students develop academic confidence through a supportive, nurturing coaching relationship that focuses on skill-building and goal-setting

  2. Helping parents navigate schooling and end the fights about homework so that they can breathe again.

Our Mission

We believe that all students can reach their definition of success, both academically and personally. We use the coaching process as a way to help students set goals, build confidence, and apply strategies to their learning and as a way to help families experience peace of mind. Through our commitments to empowerment, peace, and thoughtfulness, we aim to help our students have richer, more rewarding learner experiences that provide a foundation for a life of joy, curiosity, and purpose.

Academic Coach Position Overview

We are looking for a full-time academic coach to work with middle and high school students. This person will serve as an academic coach in 1-on-1 and/or group settings.

We will provide training on our specific approach, but experience working in education or with middle & high students is required and experience working as a middle or high school teacher is highly preferred.

The academic coach will be responsible for:

  • Working with student to determine their goals

  • Creating a positive learning environment

  • Implementing personalized academic strategies in regularly scheduled meetings with student (often weekly but may be different based on the student) or group of students to help them achieve their goals

  • Supporting student with a positive, solution-oriented approach

  • Asking students questions to prompt their own thinking rather than giving them answers

  • Helping students in a way that supports academic honesty

  • Assisting parents with understanding and implementing effective strategies

  • Setting your own learning goals as a coach and using a portion of your week for your own growth, development, and learning (ex: learning about ADHD and strategies that will help students with ADHD)

  • Keeping session notes that track your student’s progress

  • Communicating with student and parents/guardians to determine appropriate academic & organization goals and appropriate strategies and support

  • Communicating when necessary with student’s teachers (after contact form has been filed with school). This will vary based on the student.

  • Updating parents regularly (after each session by email & as needed by phone) regarding student’s progress.

  • Ensuring the student understands how to accomplish tasks for the next meeting

  • Preparing for meetings with student based on the student’s needs, including creating materials when needed

  • Communicating with the President regarding how sessions are going, needs for supplies, problems with the coaching sessions, and help with ideas

  • Contributing to weekly team meetings

Typically, we meet students at their homes or in coffee shops in the Decatur & Atlanta, GA area. Due to covid, and because we value your health and well-being, coaching sessions will be conducted online via Zoom until further notice. Once it is no longer a risk to contract covid (ex: the pandemic is over or vaccinations are available) , the ideal candidate will be willing to meet with students in person for families who request it.

This salaried full-time position will be 40 hours per week of work. Approximately 20 of those hours will be conducting sessions with students (although this number may vary slightly); the other hours will be for you to communicate with families, prepare for lessons, reflect, learn, and meet with the team. Since students typically have school until 3 or 4pm, it is a requirement that you are available 3-7pm Monday through Thursday. It is possible that you will meet with some students earlier than that.

Our starting salary is $48,500. We provide health insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, and a 401k match. We are big advocates of rest, and we provide ample opportunities for you to take time off, including at least a full week off in November, two weeks off in December, a week in April, and at least two weeks in the summer. This is at a minimum. In addition, you can have flexible days off as long as you are able to manage your student meeting schedule (ex: if you want to take off a Monday, you move your typical Monday meetings to another day that week).

This is ideal for someone who loves to learn and loves working with students to achieve their goals.

Our Values

We strive to provide an inclusive & affirming community. We are an LGBTQ-owned company, and we are affirming of the LGBTQ community. We strive to use gender inclusive language. We believe Black Lives Matter and support racial justice for Black people, indigenous people, and people of color.  We believe students with disabilities deserve equitable access to education, and we strive to eliminate ableist language and ideas in our practice while helping students advocate for their rights and needs.

We are guided by our core values of:

  • Empowerment

    • Progress, confidence-building, and skill development are more important than single grades or test scores. We focus on growth & empowerment, not perfection. Indeed, we think mistakes are an essential part of growth.

    • We commit to helping students develop self-empowerment and seek the communities & resources that can help them achieve growth, but we also acknowledge that our students may face oppressive systems due to their race, disability, neurotype, gender identity, and LGBTQ+ identity, among others. We help students grow & achieve their goals, but we do not victim blame or believe the student is solely responsible for their success. Rather, we believe in the community’s role in ensuring all children can be successful, and we consider ourselves to be an important part of that community. We believe all people deserve equitable access to education, and we strive to provide a coaching community that is affirming, inclusive, and just.

  • Peace

    • We believe all kids are natural learners, with an innate curiosity and desire to understand the world within and around them, and the best learning environment is a peaceful & calm one.

    • Learning & growing requires energy, and energy requires time to recharge and relax. Peaceful rest is important for both physical & mental health -- for both our students & our staff.

  • Thoughtfulness

    • We want our families to feel valued, our students to feel valued, and our coaches & employees to feel valued.

    • We respect physical, mental, emotional, and social needs. We keep in mind that we are all working together as humans who all have needs and wishes.

Who this job is for:

This job is right for you if you’re committed to justice and equity, especially in education. You want to work in an environment that is led by a member of the LGBTQ community, and you want to be part of a company that believes Black Lives Matter, trans women are women, and that people of all marginalized identities deserve freedom & justice. You love helping students with 504s and IEPs, as well as students who deserve them but don’t have them yet, as we have many students with ADHD, learning disabilities, and other disabilities. You are excited to be part of a small but growing company and are energized by working with young people. You are comfortable working with students of all socioeconomic backgrounds, as we work with students who come from wealthy families, students who work with us via the financial scholarships we provide, and students in between. This job is the right fit for you if you love to learn new things and feel comfortable providing support in all subjects. Even if you don’t know the “right” answer, you feel comfortable helping students find resources to answer their questions.

This job is not right for you if our values do not align with your own personal values. This job is not the right fit if you thrive in a highly structured corporate environment. This job is not the right fit if you feel uncomfortable with figuring things out and trying new things. This is not the right fit if you don’t want to help students with all subject areas.

Assistant (Part-time)

Assistant Position Overview

We are looking for an assistant to help our company with administrative tasks and day-to-day. This person will serve as an assistant to the president of the company and to other academic coaches as needed. Candidates must be comfortable with the idea that we will learn and grow together, as the person we hire will be the first person holding this position at our company. However, there will be no requirement to spend significant amounts of time indoors during the pandemic, as we value your health and wellbeing.

This part-time position will be approximately 5 hours per week to begin with, with the possibility for more hours and perhaps even a full time position as our company grows. Our starting hourly rate is $25 per hour with possibilities for increases.
